9. Staging

The principle of staging refers to how you frame your action so it is clear to the viewer. Staging is a broad concept, and it is developed through a collection of components like scene composition, camera movement, and background elements, and also in details like what clothes the character is wearing and the way they move through the scene.

An easy way to plan your staging is to think about how you can direct the viewer’s attention to your main action. The position of the camera and the way it moves is very important to accentuate an action. Close-ups are best used when the focus is on something detailed, like a facial expression, while wide shots are best used for big actions between multiple characters or to establish a location.

Timing is a very important component of staging. By animating important actions at separate times, you give the viewer enough time to process the scene. If every element in a scene moves at the same time, the viewer won’t be able to follow the action.

The background is also very important to convey a story. Where your scene is set will heavily affect the action, so make sure to add elements that directly convey the idea of the scene, while also avoiding superfluous elements that will only serve to compete for the viewer’s attention.

As an example, we can animate a simple character appear to be tired:
